Dr Desmond Gan is an Australasian College of Dermatologists fellowship trained consultant dermatologist (FACD).

He completed his undergraduate medical degree (MBBS) at the University of Melbourne with Honours, achieving Dean’s Honour List and was awarded Evelyn Coy Prize in Surgical Exam. He also completed a Biomedical Science degree in the research of epidemiology of androgenetic alopecia. He has since published in both domestic and international peer-reviewed dermatological journals, as well as co-authored a few dermatology textbook chapters.

Dr Gan undertook a further 4 years of dermatology training in various major hospitals in Victoria including St Vincent’s Hospital, Alfred Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, The Royal Children Hospital and internationally at the National Skin Centre in Singapore. In his first year of training, he was awarded the President Medal for the Pharmacology exam and in his final year fellowship exam, was awarded an International Scholarship for the American Academy of Dermatology Meeting. Upon finishing his training, he was also awarded the Florence Bequest Fellowship for which he undertook further training in India, Belgium and France for management of pigmentory diseases and vitiligo.

Dr Gan is currently an appointed consultant at the Alfred Hospital, Monash Medical Centre and the Skin Health Institute. He teaches medical students and supervises dermatology specialist trainees. He also attends the subspecialized vitiligo clinic at the Skin Health Institute, and has commenced autologous suspension cellular grafting for treatment of vitiligo.

Dr Gan has a wide range of interest in dermatological conditions, ranging from pigmentory diseases, complex rheumatology/medical dermatology, to skin cancer detection, reconstructive surgery, eczema, psoriasis, acne, hair, nail disorders and paediatric disorders. He is also accredited to treat axillary hyperhidrosis under the PBS Medicare subsidy.

Dr Gan’s interest in laser use in Dermatology started with his interest in Physics during high school winning national prizes.  This led to his interest in utilising laser to treat a variety of dermatological conditions and evidence-based result-focused aesthetic work.  Dr Gan is also a qualified cosmetic injector with particular focus on Asian skin treatment.

Dr Gan’s philosophy is to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date dermatology care, with clear focus on treating both the current problem and formulating a long term management plan.

Dr Gan speaks fluent English, Mandarin (Chinese) and Cantonese.

  3. Dr Gan’s relationship with MEDerm is one of contractor and service provider.  Dr Gan is not an employee of MEDerm.
  4. Dr Gan may practise in another facility/location outside MEDerm.  It is your right to obtain your clinical notes, and discuss with Dr Gan the best location to organise your consultation or treatment.
