PicoWay Technology Explained

All PicoWay treatments use a picosecond laser with high power and the shortest laser pulses available. A picosecond is a trillionth of a second! The ultra-short pulses with PicoWay are important because they lead to a “photoacoustic” effect that avoids heating the skin rather than a photothermal (or heat) approach that heats the skin and can lead to side effects, such as downtime and scarring.

Because PicoWay uses ultra-short laser pulses, the result is a laser that has low to no downtime after treatment. Users can resume normal activities and even apply makeup over acne scar or wrinkle treated skin within a day of treatment.

The PicoWay laser reaches under the skin for its impact, leaving the outer layer of the skin intact. The ultra-short pulses vaporize their targets before the skin has the chance to overheat. Targets can be pigment from a tattoo, melanin in the skin that causes dark spots, or areas in the dermis (a layer under the outer skin) where tiny spaces can be created to allow room for new collagen and elastin growth in the treatment of acne scars and wrinkles.

PicoWay Resolve Rejuvenation

PicoWay Resolve is an added on technology treatment on the PicoWay laser system, using a laser handpiece that splits the full beam into tiny microbeams. PicoWay Resolve acts by creating tiny open spaces, called vacuoles, under the skin where new collagen and elastin are built and can transform the skin over time.

This can be combined with the traditional Zoom handpiece treatment to allow more even clearance of pigmentation such as background pigmentation, freckling or melasma.

The use of this alone is also revolutionary in providing no- to low-downtime treatment of conditions such as acne scars, wrinkles, skin tone, rejuvenation and pore reduction.

Skin Pigmentation, Freckles, Sun Spots and Melasma Treatment

With ultra-short pulse duration and a variety of wavelengths of lasers, PicoWay is an advanced Pico-second laser system.  A variety of laser adjustment can be made to suit different types of pigmentation issues.

Tattoo Removal

Pico-second lasers have revolutionised tattoo removal treatment, allowing for less treatment sessions to achieve faster clearance.

The utilisation of multiple wavelength maximises the chance of removing the toughest multi-coloured cosmetic and professional tattoos, such as ones that contain blue or green tattoo pigment.

Acne Scarring

With the PicoWay Resolve technology, it creates a vacuolisation of deeper of skin (dermis), and causes collagen remodelling to improve acne scarring.  This technology “bypasses” the top layer of the skin, achieving a low to no-downtime treatment option, so one can go back to work or social activity a day or 2 after each treatment.

Skin Rejuvenation, Fine Wrinkling and Pore Reduction.

The PicoWay Resolve technology at a lower setting can be utilised for low-downtime rejuvenation treatment for improving fine wrinkling, pore size and skin texture.

What can PicoWay laser treat?

PicoWay is an advanced Picosecond laser most well-known for pigmentation and tattoo removal.  It is also used for no- to low-downtime acne scarring and rejuvenation.

Is PicoWay right for me?

If you are looking for a Picosecond technology laser treatment, that specifically target the pigmentation, acts below the surface of the skin and offers low- to no- downtime, PicoWay should be high up your consideration for treatment of pigmentation , skin texture and scarring.

Is PicoWay safe?

Any laser treatment can carry risk.

Side effects with PicoWay are typically transient and expected as part of the laser treatment. Patients experience low to no downtime.  More common side effects include redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, tingling or purplish spots. These effects will differ, however, depending on the treatment you receive.

Is PicoWay laser the best laser for pigmentation and tattoo?

The latest development in laser in the last 5 years is the utilisation of the Pico-second laser technology, which has an ultra short pulse duration laser.  The traditional older laser technology utilises either the long-pulsed (nanometer) Yag laser or the Q-switched (nanosecond) laser – These lasers will generate heat and have a higher risk of post inflammatory pigmentation, blistering or burning.

In simpler term, the shorter the pulse duration (Pico-second), the easier the pigment or tattoo particle is shattered and absorbed, and the less likely the target is burnt.

We utilise PicoWay ™ laser system that has the shortest pulse duration (even compared to every other Pico-second devices around), and is able to utilise a number of different wavelength for precise selection of melanin and tattoo particle target.

Is PicoWay laser painful?

Pain varies according to type of indication.

For pigmentation treamtent, minor pain is experienced, and this can be largely eliminated with topical anaesthesia cream applied half an hour prior to treatment.  Even the most tricky pigmentation e.g. Hori naevus is treatable with only local anaesthesia alone.

For Resolve acne scarring or rejuvenation, patients may experience no or just mild discomfort.

Tattoo laser removal does cause some pain because of the high energy setting required for removal of tattoo particles, usually said to be worse than having the tattoo itself.  Majority of cases will be tolerated with topical anaesthesia cream alone.  Unlike other non-professional tattoo removal places, we are a medical specialist clinic and can use prescription topical strong anaesthesia cream.

Is PicoWay Resolve rejuvenation painful?

PicoWay Resolve treatment for acne scarring , rejuvenation, fine wrinkling or pore textural improvement is a very tolerable treatment.  The discomfort ranges from no-pain to mild-pain.  The treatment is quick, done within 5 to 15 minutes.

What can I expect with PicoWay treatment?

The skin reaction depends on the indication.

For pigmentation, mild redness, swelling,  temporary darkening of pigmentation and sometimes slight pinpoint bleeding is expected between 1-3 days.  This will also vary according to the type of pigmentation treated.  Regardless, majority of patients are able to return to work within a day.

For tattoo removal, the usual reaction includes swelling, scabbing, crusting and pinpoint bleeding.

For acne scarring and rejuvenation, it is usually redness and swelling that should resolve within a day (slightly longer for a stronger scarring treatment, compared to rejuvenation setting).

How many PicoWay treatments will I need to remove my tattoo?

Professional Tattoo

At least 5 treatments

Amateur Tattoo

2-3 treatments

Traumatic Tattoo

2-3 treatments

Cosmetic Tattoo

1-3 treatments, colour dependant

Can I return to normal activities after treatment?

Yes, for pigmentation, acne scarring or rejuvenation, PicoWay has low to no downtime. Most people are able to return to their activities of daily living shortly after treatment.

For tattoo removal, you may need a bandage to keep the treatment area dry for a few days.

What makes PicoWay different from other treatments?

PicoWay is a picosecond laser with high peak power and ultra-short pulse durations for a photoacoustic, rather than a photothermal effect that heats the skin. PicoWay patients report high patient satisfaction and low to no downtime.

What is the cost of PicoWay laser treatment?

It does vary between indication of each type of pigmentation, size of area treated and difficulty of treatment.

We do not publish the cost of treatment online.  Please leave a query below, or ring 98786813 to arrange a time convenient for you to discuss with our cosmetic liaison officer.

While we are a specialist practice, the costing of our laser is in line with the expertise of our doctors / nursing staff and the technology we utilise.
