Biostimulatory Treatment

Melbourne Eastside Dermatology is Melbourne’s premium specialist dermatology practice providing Biostimulatory treatments.

In Australia, due to TGA regulation, we are unable to advertise the specific medication utilised for this treatment.

What is biostimulatory treatment?

Biostimulatory treatment involves direct placement of biostimulatory agents under the skin, to achieve collagen stimulation in the superficial dermis (second layer of the skin).

The body naturally degrades the product, forming collagen around where the area treated.

The stimulatory effect will occur for weeks to months following the treatment. The end result is tighter firmer skin, with reduced visible signs of aging such as wrinkling, sagging or textural change.

How is biostimulatory treatment performed?

The delivery of the biostimulatory treatment is either via cannula or direct needle placement, aiming to have the product sit right in the superficial dermis of the skin.

Anaesthesia is generally not required for this treatment, and can be performed under 15-30 minutes depending on the area treated.

Skin Sagging and Volume Enhancement

With careful placement targetting areas of need, such as temples, cheeks and jawline, increased collagen formation in the areas will correct skin tissue loss in a natural way, and reduce sagging.

Skin Auality, Textural and Lumosity

Treatment protocol can be modified to rejuvenate the skin and improve skin quality ; Producing visible improvement in  luminosity (the ability of the skin to bounce off lights), skin texture and fine/deep wrinkles.

What is Biostimulatory treatment?

This is a class of treatment where materials that may stimulate collagen formation can be placed directly under the skin using cannula or needle.

What is the difference between this and traditional volumising treatment?

“Traditional” volumising treatment involves direct placement of volumising agents such as hyaluronic acid directly under the skin, in the fat, or on the bone to replace volume loss.

This class of treatment requires stimulation of the body to form new collagen, and therefore the effect is much longer lasting.

Which part of the face can be treated?

The common areas of treatment include temples, cheeks, and jaw.  Treatment protocol can also be modified to treat the neck and hands area.

Can eyelids be treated?

Direct injection into the eyelids is not possible. However, treating around the areas such as cheeks and temples may improve the eyelid appearance indirectly.

How many sessions do I require?

It is highly variable between individual.  Visible improvement may be seen with only 1 treatment, and this is commonly followed up with 1-2 further treatments over 3-9 months after.

How long does the improvement last for?

As the mechanism of improvement involves stimulation of new collagen formation by the body, rather than injecting foreign material, the effect is usually longer lasting, and in some cases, said to be semi-permanently beneficial.

Is treatment painful?

This generally does not require topical anaesthesia, although some patients do find this helpful and may request for this.   The treatment is usually well tolerated.

Is there any downtime?

Some degree of swelling is experienced immediately after treatment, but this is only short lived;  Occasionally bruising can occur with the treatment.

Generally most patients will experience a no-downtime treatment, and can return to work or social activity the next day.

Is this safe?

All cosmetic therapies carry inherent risk.

Risk of treatment includes swelling, infection, bruising, and over-correction / nodules formation.  With this treatment, we suggest a careful discussion with your treating practitioner regarding the potential risk involved.

Is this a safe treatment for Asian or darker skin?

Yes this is safe for all skin colour types – being darker skin does not confer any additional risk.

What is the cost of treatment?

We do not publish the cost of treatment online.  Biostimulatory treatment may incur a higher cost compared to other similar treatments, but due to the long lasting effect, it may work out to be more economical compared to repeat volumising treatments.
